Neurofeedback Therapy: An Overview
Neurofeedback (N.F.B) is a kind of biofeedback in which we can directly train the brain functionality.
Neurofeedback describes techniques of providing feedback about neuronal activity to the patients who are suffering from Central Nervous System (CNS) disorder to teach them to self-regulate brain activity.
Neurofeedback (N.F.B) is a technique that helps patients who need Psychotherapy, cognitive and perceptual rehabilitation, and also those with mental weakness.
This technique is used as a therapy to control anxiety, depression, migraine, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), personality disorder, epilepsy, drug addiction, and other emotional and behavioral disorders. It’s also been used to help children with Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), Asperger Syndrome, learning disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
In addition, Neurofeedback therapy can improve management and job seeking skills, enhance speed and accuracy in athletes and plays an important role in their performance.
With Neurofeedback therapy patients learn how to boost their brains’ metabolic changes to reduce drug use. In this treatment, patients do not receive any electrical stimulation or other potentially harmful interventions. Furthermore, this non-invasive method does not create any physical harm or stress to patients, which means that patients who receive feedbacks have only output signal that used to be done at the level of unconscious neuronal activity.
When patients are stimulated with audio and visual signals, the brain works more optimally; therefore, the patients learn to self-regulate their brain activates and reach an advanced level of mental state without using a Neurofeedback machine.
Neurofeedback is like a comprehensive exercise program; it improves neural connection, attention, and cognitive flexibility, and it’s more similar to learning.
Conclusion
Neurofeedback is a kind of biofeedback that shows immediate function of the brain on the screen. This method of treatment tries to create self-regulation of the brain activities by using electroencephalography (EEG), and teach it to the client.
It has to be mentioned that Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapy that can be done safely, and there are no side effects during and after the treatment for clients.
We shouldn’t miss the fact that Neurofeedback is not a miraculous cure! It is not a treatment for all types of diseases but it is a complementary learning process along other treatment that requires the client’s effort.
It is an honor that Imam Jawad (A.S) Charity Organization’ Health Service Center in Herat, Afghanistan, is the first provider of Neurofeedback services along the city that treats patients with mental health disorders.
So far, many patients who are suffering from complex neurological and mental health disorders have been treated with this therapy.
Patients can book an appointment with the neurologist, Doctor Sayed Mohammad Reza Hashimi, in Bazar-e Zargarha, at the end of Sadeqiyeh Mosque allay, Imam Jawad (A.S) Charity Organization’s Health Service Center.
