Who We Are

Imam Jawad (AS) Charity Organization

Our Story

Our work began in 1988, during the month of Ramadan, in the holy city of Mashhad. In the early years, we focused on assisting Afghan refugees—especially orphans, families of martyrs, and other vulnerable families facing hardship while living in Iran. The organization was later officially registered with Iran’s Ministry of Interior in 2005.

In 1993, following the start of Mujahideen rule in Afghanistan, we opened our central office in Herat and began expanding our work inside the country. After registering with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Economy in 2001, we continued to grow our programs, eventually opening our officein Kabul in 2010.

Today, our work reaches underprivileged families across Afghanistan. Alongside our main office in Herat and branches in Kabul and Mashhad, we have established a presence in several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia—allowing us to extend our support and connect with a wider community. All of our offices operate in accordance with the laws of their respective countries.

The Imam Jawad (AS) Charity is an Afghan non-profit organization committed to supporting vulnerable communities. We are a non-political, independent organization guided by Islamic values. Our mission is simple: to serve those in need, regardless of ethnicity or nationality, while working within the legal frameworks of the countries where we operate.

The main goal of the Imam Jawad Charity Organization is to help families achieve self-sufficiency and to reduce poverty in Afghan society.

We organize our work into five main categories, each with several programs.

Livelihood support is one of the top priorities of the IJCO, as it addresses the most basic needs of families. A significant portion of our resources is dedicated to this area. Our programs include the distribution of food packages, hot meals, clothing, and essential household items. During the cold season, we also provide coal, gas, and firewood, along with financial assistance for electricity bills.

Health support is one of the key areas of IJCO’s work, as access to healthcare is essential for every family. Due to the high cost of treatment, a significant portion of our resources is dedicated to supporting vulnerable patients and improving their access to needed care. Our programs include free medical examinations and medication, financial support for treatments and surgeries within the country, assistance for patients who require treatment abroad, and home-based medical care for individuals with special conditions.

Education is one of the most fundamental pillars of a strong society. Recognizing the vital role of learning in building a brighter future, IJCO supports students at different stages of their education. We work to remove the barriers faced by underprivileged students so they can continue their education with confidence and peace of mind. Our education programs include school tuition support, school supplies, and transportation assistance for students under our care.

While governments are primarily responsible for providing social services, countries like Afghanistan often face numerous challenges and a wide range of responsibilities. As a result, it can be difficult to give focused attention to every social issue across the country. In such circumstances, non-governmental organizations play a supportive role by working closely with communities and addressing specific needs with greater flexibility and dedication.
In this context, Imam Jawad Charity Organization implements a range of social support programs aimed at assisting vulnerable families and underserved communities. These initiatives include providing access to clean water, constructing homes for families without shelter, covering house rent expenses, creating livelihood opportunities through small-scale businesses such as sewing, basket weaving, carpet weaving, and khorjin weaving, as well as offering funeral support for families in need.

Cultural values and traditions play an important role in every society. In Afghanistan, where cultural practices are deeply connected to Islamic beliefs and community traditions, preserving and supporting these values remains highly important for many families. However, ongoing economic challenges have made it difficult for low-income households to fully participate in important cultural and social occasions.
In response to these needs, Imam Jawad Charity Organization implements various cultural programs aimed at supporting vulnerable families and strengthening community well-being. These activities include marriage support grants, household support assistance for newly married couples, and the construction and equipping of libraries to promote education and cultural development. The organization also provides emergency assistance to families facing urgent and unexpected situations.

In addition to its ongoing programs, Imam Jawad Charity Organization also provides emergency relief assistance during natural disasters and unexpected crises such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, and other emergencies across different parts of the country. The organization works to support affected families by delivering timely humanitarian aid and responding to urgent community needs whenever assistance is required.
